Let’s See Your Lift Do This

One of the things I truly miss about Ohio is snow.  Waking up and peeking out the window and seeing the landscaped desaturated into shades of white and black, but mostly white.  There’s no feeling quite like it (especially if it’s a school day and you’re of school age).  As I begin my fourth year in Charlotte, I have yet to see that here.  I have also yet to see it since I’ve been going up to Ohio at Thanksgiving and Christmas for some reason too.  Luckily, my wife shares some of my strange quirks and was just as eager as I was to get out to the mountains on Monday and look for some white stuff.  That morning I happened onto an idea that I hadn’t thought about for quite a while: cross country skiing.  Now a good chunk of you reading out there just rolled your eyes.  Typical.  For you downhill diehards, you’re about to be taken to task.  You see, the more I compare my experiences of cross country and downhill, the more I realize cross country is really where it’s at.  Sure, downhill is fast and where the glamor is, but how often are either of those two things really to be coveted (“There is more to life than increasing its speed,” as Ghandi said).  Read the rest of this entry »
