Escapism: Rationalized

This is something that I’ve always had a hard time understanding about myself: that somehow the ability to care for our own world can come in second to imagined worlds.  It’s not that hunger, poverty, oppression, exploitation, and conflict don’t bother me, they very much do, but if I’m honest, I might have gotten just as worked up about the Weinstein brothers trying to remove the soul of Fanboys.  So, I have a lot of respect for folks who care very deeply about real world issues and are advocates for change (my wife, for instance; Joel Daniel Harris too).  That’s all not to say I don’t do my part, I do, but if you look at where the majority of my time and energy go, it ends up going to escapism. Boot Your Get Ons

1978 to 2009.  That’s a dang long time for anything, let alone a band with all of its original members and their 11th studio album.  And the amazing thing is, there’s something worth listening to on every one of those albums.  The newest one is No Line on the Horizon and it’s hitting stores on March 3rd and I intend to be at Best Buy at 10 am.  But, I’ll admit, I’m kind of wary.  All I’ve heard is what everyone else has heard, the new single “Get On Your Boots” and I’ll admit that didn’t thrill me.  Do they have what it takes to not show their age on this one?  I sure hope so.  Read the rest of this entry »


Year in Review: Music

This is the one where I prove how hopelessly uncool I am.  Podcasts have replaced music in my life.  I found when I was spending an hour in the car every day music just wasn’t doing it to keep me entertained and awake.  That’s when the podcast came into my life and that’s where most of my music time has gone these days.  So this list is probably the least of the lists.  But anyways, here’s what I listened to in 2008 (thank you for all the research, iTunes), not necessarily what came out in 2008: Read the rest of this entry »
